Aantekening
The Dutch spelling of Mama's last name is 'van Kuijk', although 'van Kuyk' is also used in Holland. I have used 'van Kuyk' throughout both the family history and the family tree, because even in Dutch 'ij' and 'y' are equivalent. Mama always signed her name 'van Kuyk'.
Following my mother's maternal lines via the asterisked names in her ancestry, you will get a good dose of fascinating Indo-Dutch history, for some of her ancestors came to the Netherlands East Indies in the 17th century, less than 50 years after the Dutch formed the VOC (DutchEast Indies Company). These earliest Colonials, who settled on Ceylon, married local women who would most likely have been of mixed Portuguese and Indian descent. In the "Indofication" section of Addendum to Chapter Four of FAMILY MATTERS I have put together a historical narrative as it relates to our family the like of which you will not find anywhere else, because this part of Dutch history was and, I understand, still is almost totally neglected in school curricula.
